February Face / Happy Valentine’s Day

Even though it is now one of the most globally recognized days of romance, sometimes Valentine’s Day merely punctuates the fact that it is already mid-February. Time is flying.

For many of us, this time of year brings signs of winter’s subsiding. In the US, we already celebrated Groundhog Day on February 2nd (an American folk holiday on which a specific giant rodent emerges from his nest to either gaze upon or avert its shadow, determining how many weeks of winter remain), and in San Francisco the unusually heavy rain has begun to lift up. Climate change is real, and perhaps springtime is on the way, too.

The main purpose of this post, however, is to share some new face-makers – featuring Smashbox – for a flawless, dewy complexion that can be worn in any weather.

  1. Rosebud Perfume Co. Rose & Mandarin Lip Balm is the perfect shade of grapefruit and smells like sweet, spiced oranges. Like many rose salves and tin balms, this one is a glossy formula that is easy to apply and light enough to wear directly on bare lips, or as a top coat of sheer coral to amplify another lip product. The hue beautifully complements all lips and delivers a natural glow. Fun facts: the Rose & Mandarin Lip Balm is also formulated without parabens, is gluten-free, and can be applied as a soothing balm for all types of dry skin needs. At $8, it is a wonderful multi-purpose tool. To wear it as part of a dewy, rosy look: glide it onto lips until the hue comes through & dab it onto the apples of your cheeks to build a soft glow.img_9660img_9658
  2. Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Foundation Primer solves many dryness issues associated with primers with its unique cooling gel formula – in a beautiful shade of blue, at that! Fragrance-free and paraben-free, this product feels like a cross between a primer and a face mask. It goes on as a gel that blends clear, saturates skin, and after a few moments sets to a smooth finish as you would expect a primer to. The key ingredient is a water-packing desert plant extract, hydraplex, which provides skin with these cooling and hydrating effects. Compared to Smashbox’s classic Photo Finish primers, this one delivers the same quality you expect, with an added moisturizing bonus – hence it is valued at $42, a slightly higher price than the traditional primers. To build this into your flawless skin routine, apply it right after cleansing and skincare as your first step. Only a pea-sized amount is needed – a little goes a long way – and it can be blended out from the centers of your face.img_9652
  3. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35 provides a smooth and glowing base for your next steps in building your look, in a lightweight formula with excellent coverage. Sun protection is just one additional bonus in this five-point Beauty Balm (BB) Cream, which also luminizes, moisturizes, balances the skin tone, and corrects blemishes. Fragrance-free, this formula is also designed to control excess oil and improve skin’s natural balance and appearance over time. $39 for a 1 oz. tube packed with beauty benefits. To wear, dab onto primed skin with fingertips before stippling in circular, outward motions with a brush or wedge puff. For a natural wear with fuller coverage, build thin layers using the same technique.img_9653
  4.  Smashbox Studio Skin 24 Hour Waterproof Concealer is a wonderful and incredibly long-lasting formula that efficiently corrects blemishes in a single application. Concealer in a shade one step lighter can also be used to establish a brighter base on the lid for eyeshadow, in addition to its traditional areas of application. To wear as part of a perfected coverage look, use a concealer brush to lightly dab the under-eye area, around the nose, and other darkened spots in short strokes, before smoothly blending outward. The key to perfecting this technique is blending to create a natural look with no visible contrast against your base foundation.img_9656

On their own, each of these is a powerful tool for achieving a smooth, dewy look while caring for skin and yielding benefits with wear. All together, they can be applied to build a lightweight, flawless coverage with a luminous finish.

Whether you go for chocolate, sentiments, or makeup this Valentine’s Day, you can do it with your inner glow on the surface (…maybe with the help of wine, too!).
